| < | Monte Fresco Scrapbooks | x | □ | > |  Monte Fresco was the very first Fleet Street sports photographer. He loved football and boxing and took many snaps that you will know. Throughout his long career he kept scrapbooks of all the photos that were published. The vast majority were on the back pages of the Daily Mirror. Its a huge archive. We are going to try and present some of it here.
To give you an idea of the breadth of his career and the historical scope of the scrapbooks, he covered seven World Cups, many European Championships and more than 40 FA Cup Finals, and around 45 Wimbledon Championships. He once said in an interview, “I was always looking for an incident that had gone unnoticed, something off the ball, something to make the reader stop and take a second look and think’”
The son of an East End tailor he was evacuated at the start of the war and left school at 14. He joined Topical Press in the 1950s as a runner boy and was Chief Sports Photographer at the Daily Mirror for 30 years. Every picture that was published was diligently cut out of the newspaper and pasted into scrapbooks with glue.
As a peice of social history it may prove interesting. For sports fans or photography nuts its a delight. Its a body of work, one mans view through a lens, the record of an era.
